Canines That Immediately Detect The Coronavirus With Just Their Noses…

Elysium Cruise Residence® recognises that protecting residents at nursing homes is paramount, especially given the complications and sensitivity of the elderly to age related disease, and COVID.

According to the Phoenix Veterinary Center,, canines “possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in us. And the part of a dog’s brain that is devoted to analyzing smells is about 40 times greater than ours”, and “ Dogs possess a sense of smell many times more sensitive than even the most advanced man-made instrument. Powerful enough to detect substances at concentrations of one part per trillion—a single drop of liquid in 20 Olympic-size swimming pools.”

Because of the sensitivity and trainability of canines, they have been trained around the globe to detect human diseases such as cancer, diabetes, tuberculosis, malaria, and now COVID—from smell alone. There is a demonstrable track record of success.

COVID detecting canines will form a cadre of four resident dogs onboard our Elysium ship as part of the ‘protective bubble’, combined with established COVID testing and detection procedures developed specifically for the cruise ship and airline industry. The canines being ship residents themselves are able to continue to sample suspected cases onboard, and form a line of defence at embarkation points whilst visiting other Australasian ports.

The immense value of dedicated COVID detecting canines in Elysium’s protective arsenal is that they have been proven to be able to immediately detect COVID on asymptomatic hosts, and up to 48 hours ahead of hosts that have then resulted in a positive for COVID after initially testing negative earlier.
